What are Ohio SNAP Benefits?
The Ohio Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) has been created to help low-income households to put healthy food on the table. It is meant to ensure households experiencing financial difficulties don’t go without food.
A household can be a single person or a group of people who live under one roof and share food.
SNAP is a federal program managed by each state for its residents. Each state has its own rules in addition to federal guidelines.
Snap Benefits are monthly credits on a debit-style card that can be used to buy food from approved providers.
Recently the Ohio (EBT) card has been replaced with another card called the Ohio Direction Card. This card is more secure because it can’t be used without a four-digit pin.
After you qualify, you will receive an Ohio Direction Card, and your benefit will automatically be loaded onto your card every month as long as you qualify.
How Can You Qualify for SNAP in Ohio?
In Ohio, the income requirements and maximum amounts awarded are as follows:
Maximum Gross Monthly Income
Maximum Monthly Allotment
You can make many deductions from your gross income that allow you to qualify even if your monthly income is higher than the amounts on the chart.
For example, you can deduct heating and cooling costs. In addition, you can deduct gasoline, water, and sewage charges.
If you have children, you can deduct childcare costs, including babysitters.
The rules for Ohio SNAP Benefits qualification are complicated. The amount that you qualify for depends on many variables. Your caseworker will tell you the amount you will be awarded if you are approved.
You can also use an online benefit eligibility checker supplied by the federal government to check.
