The ACP program is currently paused pending funding by Congress.

Is the ACP Program Legit?

Is the ACP Program Legit?

In a world where online scams seem to lurk around every virtual corner, it’s only natural that some people may be skeptical of the too-good-to-be-true Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) and thus are hesitant to apply for it.

However, like a hidden gem waiting to be discovered, the ACP Program is a real federal program that offers affordable access to good-quality and stable broadband service offerings to eligible low-income households and individuals across the nation.

So, why the government is offering such a great deal and how does the program works? In this blog, we’ll reveal the genuine opportunities the ACP holds for those in need, including the benefits, eligibility requirements, application process, the latest updates and how to avoid possible ACP scams.

What is the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)?

The ACP, formerly known as Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB), is a federal communications commission (FCC) benefit program that ensures eligible households have access to supported broadband services, allowing them to stay in touch with family and friends and reach out to emergency services without experiencing bill shock.

What can I get from the ACP?

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can receive up to a \$30 monthly discount on high-speed internet services from the ACP (up to \$75 if you live on qualifying tribal lands). The benefit will be paid directly to participating providers.

In addition to the discounted broadband service, ACP recipients can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 for the purchase of internet devices, such as a tablet or desktop computer, when an eligible consumer make a co-payment of more than $10 but less than $50. The benefit is limited to one monthly service discount and one device discount per ACP household.

Do I qualify the ACP

Do I qualify the ACP?

The ACP has an income based qualifying standard, which requires a household’s income to be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty guidelines. You can also qualify for the ACP benefits through specific program participation, which means that you will be eligible if someone in your household participates in tribal assistance programs or the below government assistance programs:

  • Lifeline

  • Federal Pell Grant

  • Free and Reduced Price School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program, including at Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) schools

  • Special Supplemental Nutritional Program for Women, Infants, and Children Program (WIC)

How does the application process look like?

Applying for the ACP is pretty simple. All you need to do is to submit an application and select a service plan at a participating internet service provider.

You may visit GetInternet.gov to submit your application or mail in application with required documents. Alternatively, you can apply through trusted service provider such as EASY Wireless to score extra benefits, such as a free mobile phone.

When your application gets approved, you can contact your preferred participating provider to choose an internet plan and have the ACP discounts applied to your bills.

What kind of ACP scams that I should be careful of?

While the ACP is a legit government assistance program, there are some scams taking advantage of participants or potential eligible customers. Below are some of the most common scams that you should be aware of:

  • Deceptive messages or emails from scammers to fool you into providing personal details or clicking on a phishing link.

  • Search engine promoted advertisements from unofficial websites.

  • False information regarding the termination of the ACP.

  • Fake recertification requests that aim to trick you into providing personal information.

Remember, it’s critical to always verify the source of communications before clicking on any links or giving out any personal details. When in doubts, check with official ACP channels such as the FCC or your current internet service provider, or report suspicious links or activities.

Are there any alternatives to the ACP that I may consider?

Low-income families and individuals who are in need of affordable internet access may also qualify for similar benefits from Lifeline Program (Lifeline), another federal program that focuses on discounted phone services for eligible consumers.

This program is administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC) under the direction of the FCC. Participants can receive up to a \$9.25 discount monthly (up to \$34.25 if you’re living on federally recognized tribal lands).

To qualify for Lifeline, you must either have a household income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty guidelines, or participate in government assistance programs like Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP or food stamps), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA) and Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit.

You can also receive benefits based on your child’s or dependent’ participation in any of the above programs. The application process is straightforward. You can visit lifelinesupport.org to apply. If you qualify, you will have 90 days to choose a participating service provider and sign up for eligible service.

Can I receive both benefits at the same time?

Yes. In fact, if you meet the requirements of Lifeline, you can automatically qualify for ACP benefits. You can apply through your existing provider or request enrollment in the ACP with a participating internet provider.

The best part is that not only are you allowed to enroll in both Lifeline and the ACP concurrently, but you also have the flexibility to apply the benefits to either the same service or different services. For example, qualifying individuals can enjoy a Lifeline-supported mobile phone service and a separate ACP-supported home internet service.
