Lifeline Program
The Lifeline program was created in 1985 in an effort to provide affordable phone service for all Americans and has been modified over the years to also include discounts on broadband internet connection. Lifeline provides monthly subsidies to help eligible low-income consumers afford vital phone and internet access.
The Lifeline program provides up to a $9.25 monthly subsidy that lowers the cost of phone or internet service.
To qualify for Lifeline:
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
- Medicaid
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
- Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit
Qualify for Tribal Lifeline
You may qualify if you live on federally recognized Tribal lands and take part in one of the following Tribal assistance programs:
- Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) General Assistance
- Tribally Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
- Tribal Head Start
- Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations
Qualify by Income
- Your household income must be at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines
Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP)
The ACP was launched in 2021 under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act as a long-term replacement for the temporary Emergency Broadband Benefit program created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ACP provides ongoing subsidies to help eligible households access affordable internet service.
The ACP offers up to a $30 monthly discount on internet service and up to $75 on qualifying tribal lands.
Eligible customers can access low cost internet service when signing up with participating ACP internet providers.
Qualify for ACP
It is open to low-income households participating in one of the following:
- Lifeline-eligible government programs
- Is approved to receive benefits under the National School Lunch Program or the school breakfast program
- Received a Pell Grant during the current award year
- WIC
- Households with income below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines
Currently, over 40% of U.S. households are eligible for ACP internet services.
