Summer Cooling Additional Requirements
As we mentioned, summer cooling is only available if funds are left over after winter. Apply early to make sure you get help. To be eligible for a summer cooling subsidy, your household must contain one of the following:
- A household member over 65 or under age 6
- A proven medical need for cooling
When to Apply For LIHEAP KY?
You need to apply for the heating subsidy in November and December. For the crisis payment you must apply in January through mid-March. For the cooling support, you can apply from mid-March through August.
Weatherization assistance can be applied for at any time, but it is a one-off payment that can only be used once unless you received it before September 30th, 1994. In this case, you can get help again.
How Do You Apply For LIHEAP KY?
The way to apply for LIHEAP KY is by first making a phone call and setting up an appointment with a program representative. You will need to bring verification that you qualify when you go to your appointment.
At a minimum, you need to bring the following:
- Your most recent hearing bill or lease agreement that shows your heat is included as part of your rent.
- The Social Security number of every member of the household.
- Proof of income.
If you are requesting crisis help, you must bring proof of supply termination or an eviction notice if heat is included in rent.

Apply for Weatherization
In Kentucky, the eligibility for the weatherization is the same as for LIHEAP, but you must apply separately. You apply through your Local Community Action Agency in KY.
You need to supply social security and income verification for everyone in your household. In addition, you should bring a recent utility bill. Lastly, bring either proof that you own your property or that you have the permission of your landlord to improve the property.
What is the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)?
WAP is a federal program managed in each state for its residents.

How Does the Weatherization Service Work?
