When you need help paying your bills, it can be confusing to wade through government websites to see what you need to do.
That's why we have made this guide for you to get help quickly with LIHEAP KY.
You can get help with energy costs in a few different ways with LIHEAP KY. There is energy bill assistance with two phases- subsidy and crisis.
A summer cooling program with LIHEAP KY and a weatherization service are also available.
What is LIHEAP KY?
LIHEAP stands for Low Income Energy Assistance program. It is a federal program run by each state for its citizens.
LIHEAP KY is designed to help the low-income residents of Kentucky, so they don’t have to choose between heating and other essentials.
Who is Eligible For LIHEAP KY?
To qualify for LIHEAP KY, you must be a resident of Kentucky and either a US citizen or permanent resident.
Anyone who meets the income and residence requirements can apply; however, preference is given to households with children, those over the age of 60 or those that have a member with a disability.
If your household is already getting aid from SNAP, SSI, or TANF, you automatically qualify for LIHEAP KY.
Crisis Payment Additional Requirements:
To be eligible for the crisis payment, you must meet the above requirements. In addition, if you are an electricity or gas user, you need to provide a notice that your heat has been shut off or is scheduled to be shut off.
If you use deliverable energy like wood or coal, you should have less than a 10-day supply.
Summer Cooling Additional Requirements
As we mentioned, summer cooling is only available if funds are left over after winter. Apply early to make sure you get help. To be eligible for a summer cooling subsidy, your household must contain one of the following:
- A household member over 65 or under age 6
- A proven medical need for cooling
When to Apply For LIHEAP KY?
You need to apply for the heating subsidy in November and December. For the crisis payment you must apply in January through mid-March. For the cooling support, you can apply from mid-March through August.
Weatherization assistance can be applied for at any time, but it is a one-off payment that can only be used once unless you received it before September 30th, 1994. In this case, you can get help again.
How Do You Apply For LIHEAP KY?
The way to apply for LIHEAP KY is by first making a phone call and setting up an appointment with a program representative. You will need to bring verification that you qualify when you go to your appointment.
At a minimum, you need to bring the following:
- Your most recent hearing bill or lease agreement that shows your heat is included as part of your rent.
- The Social Security number of every member of the household.
- Proof of income.
If you are requesting crisis help, you must bring proof of supply termination or an eviction notice if heat is included in rent.
The number to call is 1-866-674-6327
Apply for Weatherization
In Kentucky, the eligibility for the weatherization is the same as for LIHEAP, but you must apply separately. You apply through your Local Community Action Agency in KY.
You need to supply social security and income verification for everyone in your household. In addition, you should bring a recent utility bill. Lastly, bring either proof that you own your property or that you have the permission of your landlord to improve the property.
What is the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)?
WAP is a federal program managed in each state for its residents.
The program intends to make homes more energy efficient and comfortable so that homeowners can save money for years to come.
How Does the Weatherization Service Work?
First, you contact your local weatherization service and apply through them. They will determine if you are eligible according to the rules we mentioned above.
Once approved, they will schedule an energy inspection of your home. After they determine how you can be helped, they will complete the work needed.
Examples of this are installing installation or replacing old equipment that are no longer energy efficient.
Many households report savings of $500 a year after a weatherization service.
