The federal government does not directly give people free cell phones.
Instead, Lifeline is a federal assistance program that provides eligible households with a monthly discount on phone, internet, or bundled service. Participating Lifeline providers like EASY Wireless can use that benefit to offer qualifying customers discounted or free wireless service.
EASY Wireless may also provide a free smartphone to qualifying customers with eligible plans. Phone models and offers vary based on location and availability.
What Is the Lifeline Assistance Program?
Lifeline is a federal program designed to make communications services more affordable for eligible low-income households.
The standard Lifeline benefit can provide a discount of up to $9.25 per month on qualifying internet or bundled service, or up to $5.25 per month on qualifying phone service.
Households living on qualifying Tribal Lands may receive an Enhanced Tribal Benefit of up to $34.25 per month.
With an eligible EASY Wireless plan, the Lifeline benefit may cover the cost of your monthly wireless service.
How Do Low Income Families Qualify for Lifeline?
There are two common ways to qualify: through participation in an eligible government assistance program or through your household income.
Qualify Through a Government Assistance Program
- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP/Food Stamps)
- Medicaid
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
- Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA), including certain Section 8 housing assistance
- Veterans Pension or Survivors Benefit
If you live on qualifying Tribal Lands, additional programs can establish eligibility, including:
- Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
- Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (Tribal TANF)
- Tribal Head Start, for households meeting the income-qualifying standard
- Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
You only need to meet one of the Lifeline eligibility requirements.
Qualify for Lifeline Based on Household Income
You may also qualify even if you don’t participate in one of the government programs above.
For 2026, your household can qualify for Lifeline if its income is at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
